This one-of-a-kind kalimba is built into a hand-carved wooden sea turtle, with a coconut shell sound chamber forming the body. Seven metal tines mounted on a hardwood bridge produce the kalimba’s signature soft, melodic, music-box tones — pluck them with your thumbs and let the coconut shell do the rest.
Every turtle is hand-painted in vivid greens and yellows, with intricate dot-work mandalas swirling across the shell. “MAUI” is painted on the front of the coconut chamber. Because each one is painted by hand, no two are exactly alike — your turtle will have its own personality in the brushwork and dot patterns.
The kalimba (also known as a thumb piano or mbira) has roots in traditional African music and has become a beloved instrument worldwide for its meditative, calming sound.
